Es Vedra

Es Vedra

near Cala d'Hort, Ibiza

Es Vedra is a striking rocky island, standing 378m and made of limestone, our old geological chum. It's surrounded by all kinds of myths, believed to be the island of the sirens in Homer's epic, holy island of Tanit (Carthaginian goddess of sauciness), and third most magnetic spot on the earth (after the North Pole and Mike's Discount Magnet Warehouse). Father Palau i Quer hung out with the Virgin Mary on Es Vedra in the nineteenth century, Mike Oldfield put it on the cover of Tubular Bells II after overlooking it from his studio (a view that Noel Gallagher now frowns over), and it stood in for Bali Hai in South Pacific. There's also UFO sightings ahoy, compasses don't work in the area, and a French chap burnt himself to death from a nearby spot a couple of months ago. Blimey.
